Thoughts

I was so sad to hear of Hayley’s untimely passing. I met Hayley when we were both volunteers at Sangam World Centre in India, and had the pleasure and privilege of sharing many adventures with Hayley during our time in India and afterwards. I do not think I have had as much fun in any other chapter of my life and that was in no small part due to Hayley. Straight out of university, and with Hayley just a few years my senior, she was a key figure in showing me the way in adult life. Later on, after the birth of my first child, she was at the end of the phone with advice and support on c section recovery and all things new baby. With her generous heart, and ability to provide good humour and wise counsel in equal measure, she was a wonderful friend to many. Although we had drifted apart in recent years, she is never far from my thoughts- only a few weeks ago a song came on the radio which reminded me of Hayley and our time in India, and I could feel a big smile spreading across my face as I drove along. I will treasure the memories of the time we spent together. Shine bright, Hayley.

One of the joys of volunteering at Sangam World Centre, in Pune India, for a year 2005-2006, were the people I worked with and those that visited this amazing place for events. Gir Guides and Girl Scouts from around the world visited for many and varied events. One group that stayed particularly close were programme volunteers and what are now called Tares(working with NGOs) - most were from the UK. Hayley worked in programme and I was the event administrator - we were both there for a year and had the most amazing time. It was a great preparation for her time with UNHCR. A few years ago whilst on a singing trip, I stayed with her and her husband and their two children in France. Lots of 'remember when'. So many laughs and how wonderful to meet Ed, Naomi and Zach. While I didn't speak with Hayley recently, we had a few messages(FB) back and forth in her last weeks. I have such fond memories of the times we had in India. The odd bit of mischief; saris in saffron, green and white at an Indian (v) UK cricket match which made Page 1 of the Pune newspaper; karaoke at Not Just Jazz by the Bay; shopping in MG Road and Laxmi Road; cold coffee; dance moves including spread the butter, around the block, shopping trolley, pat the dog, change the light bulb. Her zest for life, her love of family and friends, her sense of fun, her passion for service, her quirkiness are indelible reminders f a life gone too soon. Late tonight(Melbourne Australia) I'll connect with others to celebrate the wonder that was Hayley. A true-blue girl guide Gone Home. Rest in Peace beautiful one, Go Well and Safely into the arms of the angels. You will always be fondly remembered by your Sisters in Guiding.

The last weeks I've been thinking deeply about human connection and how somehow every connection leaves an unerasable mark on us. I've been thinking of Hayley and the impact she had on me, and will continue having even in her absence. Hayley was energetic, fun, and always planning her next trip and adventure. Even though we had not seen each other for more than 3 years when she came to visit in Jordan in September 2023, the conversation immediately kicked off and it felt like no time had passed. We spoke about everything and nothing, because that is what it was to be friends with her. No topic was too hard, none too superficial. She was genuine and true to herself, and also in her engagements with others. At one point we were working in the same unit, sitting in an open landscape corridor on opposite sides. We took up a habit of going for short coffee breaks, sometimes to let out some frustrations or tensions. All it took was one look at each other across the corridor, no words spoken. We both knew what was needed, and left the office through different doors to meet up briefly outside. These 'no questions asked', 'I'm here for you' moments were important. Hayley made me laugh, and I'd like to credit her for the fact that my wardrobe now contains a few clothing pieces with animal pattern. When we last met, I was struck by how content Hayley seemed. I found so much joy in hearing about her life back home in the UK, about the kids and Ed, about her exercise and healthy lifestyle, about her taking up old hobbies and starting to go to concerts, about her planned trips, and about her close relations with other friends. It somehow seemed to me that she had become the best and truest version of herself. While I desperately would have wished for her to continue on this life journey, I am immensely grateful for having had the chance to know her. I am proud that she wanted to be friends with me and I am so proud of her and the person she had become. Ed, our doors will always be open for you, Naomi and Zach. And when it comes to the time when the kids are older and want to go solo travelling, please remind them that there will always be room for them at ours, wherever that may be. I will miss Hayley immensely.
